Plans for 2009

After a hiatus since the start of 2009, the planning team of PLF's Springfield Chapter began in March to arrange activities for the current year. Besides monthly business meetings, the group's plans include several fundraisers:

Since hosting the 2008 Retreat last September, the chapter raised almost $500 during gift-wrapping and coupon booklet sale events (standard fundraisers for the local chapter). Funds collected this year will be used to defray the cost of attending the upcoming annual retreat and to assist with the purchase of property for a proposed women's transitional house that will also house the chapter's office.

Daley Haley, the homeless liaison, for Springfield School District 186, was invited to attend the chapter's June business meeting. Along with describing her position, she explained how PLF can be helpful in mentoring homeless mothers who have children attending the district's schools.

In fact, chapter members hope to conduct a reading workshop for both parent and children residents of Contact Ministries, a homeless shelter for women with children. The shelter is one of three such shelters served by the school district. Also, the chapter hopes to sponsor other help sessions for residents at all of the district's shelters.

Other workshops specifically for the mentees and others affiliated with PLF will be presented during the year. The sessions will address such topics as self-esteem, conflict resolution, drug intervention, and nutrition.
